Hüseyin Mengi: A Lifetime Dedicated to Yacht Building
Hüseyin Mengi is the Chairman of Mengi Yay Yachts, a Turkish custom yacht builder whose heritage in the trade dates back to 1964. His career began on the shipyard floor and has continued through every stage of the company's transition into international superyacht construction.
Early Years and Apprenticeship
Hüseyin Mengi was born on 28 February 1972 in Kastamonu, Turkey. He joined Mengi Yay in 1983 as an apprentice, at an age when yacht building was still learned primarily through observation, repetition and the guidance of senior craftsmen.
Over the following years he gained experience in different departments of the yard, from construction and fitting to finishing work — an education in materials and tolerances that later shaped how he leads projects.
Taking the Helm
In 1996 he took the helm of Mengi Yay Yachts. The period that followed coincided with the wider modernisation of the Turkish yacht-building industry, as yards in Tuzla, Istanbul moved from traditional production towards engineered, contract-driven custom superyacht construction.
Under his direction the company developed steel and aluminium superyacht capability, collaborated with international designers and naval architects, and established yacht lines that carry the yard's identity.
Leadership Today
As Chairman, Hüseyin Mengi represents a leadership philosophy that combines craftsmanship, sustainability, innovation and long-term thinking. He remains closely involved with owners and project teams, treating the relationship after delivery as part of the build itself.
